Rainbow obsidian is a mesmerizing variety of volcanic glass known for its subtle bands of iridescent green, purple, gold, blue, and pink that appear when the stone is viewed under bright light. Like other forms of obsidian, it forms when silica-rich volcanic lava cools extremely quickly, preventing a crystalline structure from developing. Its rainbow sheen is created by microscopic layers and inclusions, often associated with tiny magnetite nanoparticles, that interact with light to produce its colorful iridescence. Some of the most renowned rainbow obsidian comes from volcanic regions of Mexico, particularly the state of Jalisco, with obsidian deposits also occurring throughout other volcanically active regions of the world.

Metaphysically, rainbow obsidian is believed to combine the grounding and protective qualities of obsidian with a gentler, heart-centered energy.
